Title:Fall Warming in Wellfleet Mass
Caption: The Spirit of America on a harsh winter day
The Goal to Ensure Environmental Sustainability means a lot to me. If you look outside what do you see trees? Yes, most of the time you do. Do you see trash? Not always but mostly you would. We need people to help clean the woods of trash and save the animals and their homes. Many people don’t have clean water in their homes in my community. We could raise money for people to come and fix the pipes to give them clean fresh water. We at my house turn the hot water switch to save fuel which helps the environment in the long run. More people could do this or even use less water to do the dishes to help out a little. They could even not use the dishwasher. Dishwashers can be very harmful to the environment along with lots of other things.

Title: “Touching Life” because the hand is touching the baby that is living inside the belly.
Caption: Struggling pregnant mother in Wellfleet Mass
I see the Goal of Improving Maternal Health in my community because there are many people who become pregnant and can’t take care of themselves the way that they should. My sister is doing well because she already has one kid. This goal means a lot to me because I watched my sister struggle with her first pregnancy. It is not easy to keep yourself healthy while you are pregnant. I want to see healthy pregnant woman all over the world and see the baby healthy and safe as well.

Title: Dunes on Cape Cod
Caption: Imagine these beautiful Dunes covered in garbage.

Title: Recycle Bin
Caption: A little recycling goes a long way
I took these photographs to show how you can help save the environment, and to show its beauty here in our community. One of my photos shows how we can recycle to help contribute to sustaining a healthy environment. I took the photo of the Dunes because they are a big part of the Cape, and I wanted to show how beautiful they were. If we don’t sustain a healthy environment just imagine how that will affect their beauty.

Title: Repair and Restore

Title: Frozen Economy
Caption: All the fishing boats have been removed before the harbor froze at Rock Harbor, Orleans, MA.
I took these photographs of the tractor and the docks and the frozen and empty harbor to represent the seasonal lag in the economy and repairs that go into the fishing industry on Cape Cod. Its winter, the boats have been taken out of the water and now the harbor is being repaired in preparation for the next season.

I took this photograph to show how many perfectly good personal possessions are discarded to our dump and how a private citizen recycles to excesses because he finds unbearable to see such waste in our American culture.
Title: Unbearable Waste
Caption: Photo represents a classic Cape house surrounded by a big porch invaded by recycled goods that no one wants anymore. This house is surrounded by neat and well kept homes and stands in contrast with its neighbors. This picture reflects also the packrat mental state of the home’s owner who cannot stand throwing anything away. This photo fits into this project by linking it to Environmental Sustainability and more specifically to recycling programs. Furthermore I would like it to address an educational component teaching people how to make things that last and to treasure and appreciate their possessions until they are truly worn out and unrecyclable!!

Title: Hopeful Message
Caption: This photo had a lot of meaning for me because it emphasizes the support of an entire community for people who are HIV positive or who have Aids. I was in this town when this same community shunned the people attacked by this disease and discriminated against them with housing and work. I even knew some families that did no want to have anything to do with their own daughters and sons who carried this disease.
This photo shows the Center for HIV and AIDS patients with a nice Christmas reef on its door. In front of it on the deck’s balustrade, a huge banner is on display with the words that promote the strong alliance of the community with its AIDS patients. It is located on the main street for everyone to see when driving by.

I took this photograph because I liked the contrast between the golden sands of the dunes and the vibrant white and blue of the waves. The dune in the photograph has been eroding for years and there is a sign nearby warning people of the dangers of the erosion. In order to preserve our local environment, we must preserve our dunes. The dunes are a huge part of Cape Cod, as is the beach, so I wanted to capture both the dunes and the ocean in one photograph showing their beauty, but also showing the imminent destruction of this beauty.

Title: Trees on Hill
Caption: The incoming tide sweeps in toward the shore as the looming dune sit back and awaits its destruction.

Title: Decorative Stove
Caption: My stove that brightens up the room.
I took this photo to show the way we eat in my house. We cook everything on our stove. Our kitchen has become a very central place in my house, where we gather to talk to each other and eat with each other. I wanted to show how important eating is in my family, and how fortunate I feel that I get several good meals each day.

Title: Simple Pleasure
Caption: I took these photographs because I thought that the millennium goal of “Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger” is a very important issue in every society. Eradicating poverty, is important because some people are starving while other people are eating chocolate and having caviar.
Title: Simple things that are not appreciated, such as chocolate
Caption: For me to take part in a project like this has been completely helpful and humbling. This project has made me realize that the things that I take for granted other people would love to have them and maybe I should appreciate them more. This project has taught me that the next time I complain about what I do not have I should think about what I have and that there are many people who would love to have what I have. My “simple pleasure” picture, which is a chocolate, is something that in our culture is considered a necessity, but in other cultures, it is considered “gravy” or something extra. It is not so nutrientious eventhough so many people in American cultural eat it everyday. To think about something as simple as chocolate that I personally eat everyday, and then to think about others starving is very overwhelming. While Americans are having chocolate, others are praying for something as simple as water or bread. Which is something I also take for granted by buying sparkling water and vitamin water.

Título: Photographing the Produce Truck
Legenda: I took the pictures of the produce truck that comes to the neighborhood a few times day. We can buy vegetables and fruit and milk and snacks. It is good because sometimes we can”t get to the store and the food is cheaper on the truck then into the store too.
What has it meant to be a part of this project? It has helped me see my neighborhood differently.
